In Afyonkarahisar, the Gendarmerie was called in response to a
fire in a hayloft, where they found a man's body chained to a stake.
The man was identified as Ali Çaputçu (30) and his wife Emine
was taken into custody, along with 6 other people.

While 4 of the 6 were released, Emine and Halil İbrahim
Karataş were arrested.  In her statement to the Gendarmerie, Emine
hanım explained that on the night of the incident her husband went
to a coffee shop, while she stayed at home.  A pebble thrown on
her window prompted Emine hanım to "go downstairs, where I
saw Halil.  I asked him why he had come and he tried to kiss
me.  Then he picked me up and took me to a room next to the
hayloft.  At that point, my husband came and cursed us.  Halil
put a rope around my husband's neck and then tied him to
a stake in the hayloft.  I went back upstairs and fell asleep (!),
noticing the fire in the morning."

As for Karataş., he claimed to have been at home at the time
of the incident and refuted Emine hanım's assertions.  Emine
hanım was released and Halil İ.K. was arrested.

Kavillioğlu lays groundwork for Moore's campaign in Hatay,
which, coincidentally, is Turkey's southernmost state...

The provincial "müfti" (official expounder of Islamic law) in Hatay
province, Hamdi Kavillioğlu, gave a speech to parents at the Narlıca
Hz. Ayşe Girls Anatolian İmam Hatip (religious) High School and
encouraged the parents to marry their daughters off when they reach
puberty.   According to Kavillioğlu, as Moslems parents have the right
to 'give their children a nice name', 'provide them with a good education',
'behave well toward their children' and 'marry them off when they reach

Kavillioğlu asserted that parents' right to marry off their teenage children
is ordered in the Koran and by the Prophet Muhammed.  Once Kavillioğlu's
words were reflected in the press, though, they were erased from his office's
official web page.  A new announcement from Kavillioğlu's office
confirmed his words but pointed out that he had not specified any
particular age for marriage. (!)

Tough guy mayors Yaralı  & Çerçi, bookends. Hapless Diktaş
at upper right.

Suat Diktaş, the director of rural services for the Saruhanlı municipality
in Manisa province, was kidnapped at gunpoint by the mayors of
Saruhanlı and Yunusemre districts and interrogated for two hours.
Diktaş related his traumatic experience in a letter to AKP (Turkey's
ruling party) Parliamentarian Erol Kaya, who is also the head of the
AKP's Local Administrations group.

In the letter, a copy of which was obtained by Sözcü, Diktaş stated that
he was questioned about CHP (Turkey's main opposition party)
parliamentarians and deputy mayors.  Diktaş told Sözcü that AKP
big-wigs advised him to "wait, don't do anything. We're waiting for
guidance from AKP Headquarters."

 The text of Diktaş's letter:

"On 30 October 2017, at about 11 o'clock, as I went to a day-care center
run by the Yunusemre municipality,  Mayor Mehmet Çerçi was going
there, as well.  Mehmet Öcal and a man in a grey suit, along with an
armed bodyguard named Volkan, stopped my car and made me get out,
saying that "Mehmet Çerçi wants to see you."  A group of between 10
and 15 armed men took me to a place near the day-care center where
there were no cameras.

Next, someone said "call Saruhanlı Mayor Hüseyin Yaralı and have
him come here, too."  Then they took me to a building in the industrial
area belonging to the Yunusemre municipality, where the two mayors
interrogated me like prosecutors.  They mentioned Deputy Mayor Kılıç
Kaya and asked 'is he taking bribes? It seems you've sent documents
to Ankara and Istanbul.  Have you spoken with Özgür Özel and his
advisors? Are you a MİT (Turkish intelligence) agent? Are you the man
of someone in Ankara?'  Later, AKP Parliamentarian Metin Külünk said
that he called the governor and the police to say that I had been kidnapped.
The police brought me to the police station."

As for Külünk, he subsequently said that he was sorry about the incident
and that Diktaş's letter was laying in front of Erol Kaya.

of Religious Affairs has just issued a ruling insisting that "buying
a lottery ticket is gambling and is forbidden." (!)

Nevertheless, the Religious Ministry reaps 255,000 TL per year
from the interest (also forbidden by Islam) of the lottery money.

Yer altı konteynerinden oğluna atık toplattı
Syrian refugee version of "The Apprentice"

In Adana, a father who put his son into a garbage container 3 meters
beneath the ground to collect refuse drew amazed looks from passersby.
The incident occurred in the central Çukurova district on Adnan Kahveci
Boulevard.  The Syrian child searched with a flashlight for recyclable
materials to hand back up to his father, who then put the items into an
electric cart.  When the child could find no more "treasures" in the
airless and dark depths of the container, his father pulled him back up
and the two went on their way.

"Cirit": Turkic Polo in the Snow

Cirit aşkı Kar dinlemiyor
       The "cirit" equivalent of "gooaaallllllll!!"

The horsemanship sport "cirit" has been played in Central Asia and
Anatolia for centuries.  Both young and old living in villages in Selim
district of Kars province have taken cirit to a new level of interest. For
example, in Kekeç village cirit-lovers play the game on the snow in
the early morning, with temperature at minus-12.

The players in Kekeç, Başköy and Hasbey villages play for about two
hours, displaying all the beauty and fine points of the game.  Some
older men, too, mount the horses to recall their youth and even some
women, enthused by the spectacle, ride horses for the first time in
their lives.

Tahir Yıldırım (71), who left Hasbey village 40 years ago to go to
northern Cyprus, returned to his village to renew his love for
cirit, mounting a horse and joining in the game.   He explained that
"we used to play cirit just like this in our village in our 20s.  Sometimes
on the snow.  I'm so glad our young people are carrying on the tradition
of cirit."

Muhammet Ekinci added that "the snow and cold can't deter us from
playing cirit and passing it on to coming generations.  Our horses
are a bit raw so they have to be trained but we play cirit well."
Büşra Bayam, one of the lady spectators, said that after the game
finished she couldn't help but get on a horse and ride around a bit.

Much better behaved than the typical metrobus rider, for sure.

Volunteer university students who have a project to meet the winter needs
of children in village schools in Turkey, knitted (!) on the Istanbul
metrobus for 3 hours to call attention to their cause.  The students
participating in the "Yarını Aydınlat Gençlik Program" (Brighten
Tomorrow Youth Program) gathered at the Beylikdüzü metrobus station.

With their knitting needles and wool, the students boarded the metrobus
and sat in the back, knitting all the way to Söğütleçeşme and back again
to Beylikdüzü - a 3 hour trip.  The students will donate the scarves, hats
and gloves they knit to needy students in villages across Turkey.

"Trump" Radishes Eaten to Protest Jerusalem

türkçe links to original Turkish article

(Milliyet Newspaper, 12 December 2017)

Hard to imagine stronger condemnation, especially if they
don't brush their teeth afterwards.

A group of "muhtars" (village chiefs) in Antalya's Kumluca district ate
radishes upon which they wrote "Trump", in order to protest the U.S.
President's declaration of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.  The chiefs
gathered in front of the Kumluca Muhtarlar Association building, led
by Mustafa Tüfekçi, the muhtar of Sarıcasu village.

Tüfekçi read the group's announcement, which besides condemning
Trump, noted that Jerusalem is the most sacred place for the Islamic
world after Mecca and Medina.  Tüfekçi stated that all Moslems
should unite against the occupation by the West and Zionism.  After
the announcement was read, all the muhtars ate their "Trump"-
emblazoned radishes (!).

Troy Treasures Still Spark Controversy

(Milliyet Newspaper, 11 December 2017)

troya savaşı sürüyor önder yılmaz ile ilgili görsel sonucu
Schliemann adorned his wife Sofia (but he called her by his
pet name Helen (!)), with gold he stole from Troy.

A report by the Turkish authority charged with returning stolen historical
artifacts to the country has revealed that the effort involving priceless
items related to Troy involves Turkey, Russia and Germany.   The report
identifies the first person to spirit such treasures away from the soil of
the Ottoman Empire as Heinrich Schliemann, who was given permission
to dig at, first, Hisarlık in Çanakkale, and, subsequently, at Troy, beginning
in 1868.

In 1873 Schliemann secretly sent 155 gold, silver and "elektron" items
like jewelry, cups, copper and bronze weapons and tools he found at
Troy to Athens.  These items were subsequently exhibited in England
and then sent to the Berlin Museum.  The Ottoman State filed suit against
Schliemann, who was fined 10,000 francs.  In April 1875 Schliemann
sent 50,000 francs to the Ottoman Ministry of Education for the money
to be used at the Müze-i Hümayun (Museum of the Sultan) in Istanbul.

What did he bring home to Angelina?...

A portion of Troy's treasures found its way to Russia and in 1990 it was
learned that these items were being held in the Moscow-Pushkin and
St. Petersburg Hermitage Museums.  The 16th paragraph of the friendship
treaty between Germany and the Soviet Union signed in 1991, to which
Turkey was a participant, stipulated that the Troy treasures in Russia
would be returned to Germany.

The Russian Parliament, though, claimed that such items were Russian
property and this law was passed on the third try, after Boris Yeltsin had
vetoed it twice.  Consequently, the Troy treasures remain in Russia to
this day.  The visit of Valdimir Putin to Ankara on 11 December might
be an opportunity to raise this issue, according to the Minister of Culture
and Tourism Numan Kurtulmuş.

Some items from Troy, including 24 pieces of gold jewelry, were held
in the University of Pennsylvania Museum, after having been purchased
in 1966.  These items have been returned to Turkey and are currently
being held at the Ankara Anatolia Civilization Museum until the planned
museum at Troy is finished.
